I really enjoyed the Commonwealth series of stories and have read the majority of them. I think they are some of the best SciFi writing around. This book however, is a huge disappointment. I was 75% of the way through the book before I even had any idea what the book was about. It's not uncommon for Hamilton to take a long time to get to the point, but in this book I don't think there ever was a point. It's just a fantasy story about an old man being able to go back to the body of a 20 year old and have sex with every young girl around including his sons friends. There's no other point to it. Other than the "rejuvenation" procedure, this book has nothing to do with the Commonwealth.

I bought this book because I loved "Pandora's Star" by Peter F. Hamilton and his website led me to believe "Misspent Youth" was a kind of a "prequel" to it. It is in a sense that it placed in a time earlier than the events depicted in "Pandora's Star" but that's about it. What's more, it's even hard to tell what the purpose of this book was. 90% of the story is about sex. Not that I object to sex in books but as part of the story, not a story in itself. If you want to read about horny teenagers and a 70-year old who became another horny teenager, this book is for you. It tells a story of the first man given the rejuvenation treatment that made him 20 again. Unfortunately, instead of exploring implications of this monumental discovery, the author decided to make his main character act like a horny teenager let off the leash for the first time in his life and concentrated on describing his "adventures" in great detail. It's really impossible to feel anything but a mild disgust for all of the characters in the book and it makes it extremely hard to read. All the time I kept thinking "when is the story finally going to begin?". The joke's on me. The teenage love/sex exploits are the story here. I am glad I'm finally finished with it.
I read this because I'm interested in reading Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained (I'm aware it's not strictly necessary). I found the character development shallow and hard to believe. Overall, it felt a little like a chore to finish, but I was mildly entertained, and it was short.
If you're a fan of Hamilton, you'll likely enjoy this one. The story lacks a bit of his usual scope and revolutionary tech ideas. However, the characters are well developed in typical Hamilton fashion and the story teases you enough to make you want to keep coming back until you finish it. Like most of his books, the ending is a little disappointing and abrupt, but consistent with the storyline. Be on the look out for a few cameos of characters from some of his best sellers!
I am addicted to Peter F. Hamilton and for good reason. He is by far one of the best science fiction authors today and I will read anything he writes. That being said this book is not as engaging as some of his other work. I love the premise of the book and think the writing, as always, was very good but compared to his other work it is... simple. There is really just one plot and while there are a couple of sub-plots they are to shallow to really let them stand on their own; rather they blend a little too well into the background of the story. If you have read his Commonwealth series of books this is a neat little bookend on one side of the series but it can't really stand on it's own which is a shame because it would have been a good intro to the series if it had more ties to the other books and a little more oomph.
Read it only if you're the kind of person who would enjoy watching Phil Mckelson play a round of golf...before he had even the slightest grasp of the basic fundamentals of the game. There is absolutely none of the magic found in his later books, like Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained. I read it only because I was told it took place in an earlier century before Pandora's Star. But you won't find much at all about the future Commonwealth worlds. And it's a fairly painful read, just not very well done at all. I did have high hopes when a character named Nigel was mentioned early on, but there is no indication that this would later become Sheldon. The only name you'll recognize is Gore Burnelli, who has a no-dialogue conversation with the main character, Jeff Baker. It's ostensibly a story about Baker and his family. Baker is the first person to ever undergo a rejuvenation, the only other real link to the later books. Baker is a poor first choice who is suggestive of the notion that we would not necessarily do it better the second time around if we could do it all over again. In fact, he makes the most atrocious choices possible. But he has a chance to redeem himself, even if it costs him almost everything. And that rejuvenation? Well, sometimes seems to have gone terribly awry with that...Wow, I'm about to make you read it, aren't I?
Peter Hamilton is an excellent writer, you know that and this book is not disappointing. He explores well the issues caused by technological advances and the impact those may have on the individual and society. However, I think Hamilton is far better when writing space opera...this is not it. Do I recommend buying this book? Yes, he is that good. Can you expect the sense of marvel and "awesome" that you will get from his other commonwealth/confederation books? No, but that would be unfair to this book.

Overall, a good book...buy it if you are a Hamilton fan. If you are not, I recommend going first to his other books and then come back to this one
The best thing I can say about this is that it shows how much Hamilton has improved over the years. Fallen Dragon, The Void Trilogy, and even the Commonwealth Saga all are excellent. This has no plot, sophomoric writing, and completely unbelievable dialogue.
